abstract Apparatus (20) and methods for producing a signal or signals related to the moisture content of a substance using impedance, radio frequency loss or dielectric loss techniques are disclosed together with apparatus and methods for producing a signal or signals related to the density and/or thickness of a substance using backscattered gamma-rays. Apparatus (20) includes a capacitor sensor including a pair of shielded plates (23) mounted below a coke or coal (11) carrying conveyor (14), and supplied with A.C. from generator (21). The latter is coupled via measuring means (24) to a computer (17). A gamma -ray source (12) and detector (13) provide a signal via processor (16) to the computer representative of density and/or thickness of coal (11). The computer calculates the moisture content of the coal or coke from the conductance, susceptance and density of the coal. <IMAGE>
