titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to incandescent mantles |
abstract | 216,968. Terrell, T., and Monarch Mantles, Ltd. March 17, 1923. Radiators. - Heat - radiating incandescent mantles for gas, oil, or vapour stoves, which may also emit light, are made by treating an asbestos or other permanent skeleton with a liquid composition containing a caloric agent, a substance convertible by heat into a substantially non-volatile oxide of an earthy base which forms a binding-agent for the caloric agent, and a nitrated carbohydrate, for example nitro-cellulose, or other suitable volatile binding-agent. The salt of the metallic binding-agent may be dissolved in the solution of the nitrated carbohydrate; its oxide value in relation to that of the, caloric agent may be from 5 per cent to 20 per cent bv weight; and it may consist of thorium and calcium nitrates in the proportion, for example, of 4 to 1 respectively by weight, or of a mixture of several nitrates, such as thorium, calcium, and magnesium. Salts of other metals yielding suitable oxides may be used. The caloric agent in the impregnating solution may consist of red oxide of cerium or red oxid'e of iron, which enhance the appearance of the mantle when cold by giving it a red colouration In a specific example, the impregnating solution consists of 200 grammes soluble nitrocellulose, 1500 cem. ether, 1500 ccm. methylated spirit, 1000 grammes cerium oxide, 50 grammes calcium nitrate, and 200 grammes thorium nitrate. The asbestos skeleton after soaking is dried on a formerr, preferably at a temperature of from 80‹ C. to 100‹ C. Specification 28407/07 is referred to. |
