abstract A black titanium oxynitride powder is described, containing 4-35 weight % oxygen, 2-20 weight % nitrogen and 63-76 weight % titanium and having an O:N weight ratio of 15 to 0.2. The powder is obtained by reaction of titanium dioxide with nascent nitrogen. The material is useful as a non-toxic black pigment.
