abstract | A valve for handling particulate material such as residues from nuclear reactor fuel, eg. for reprocessing uranium and plutonium oxide to recover plutonium for fuel, has a conduit 30 with an inner resilient sleeve 50. A coupling (81, Fig. 5) connects the conduit to a container (41) of material. The assembly can be inverted about axis 42 to bring a flange 30a to seal against end face (43) of a receptor container eg. a dissolver basket. A plunger 51 movable by a pneumatic ram (55, Fig. 4) normally closes the conduit by squeezing the sleeve 50 between the inner surface of the conduit and the end face 52 of member 51 which conforms to the shape of the inner surface. The member 51 moves in a slot 54 in the conduit. In one arrangement the sleeve 50 is extended to overly flange 30a to form a sealing surface. <IMAGE> |
