titleOfInvention Expert system
abstract A computer method and system is provided in which an inference engine (11) forms inferences based upon rule data stored in flat files (10). The data represents expert knowledge. The flat files are multi- dimensional association tables for use in problem solving. An inference occurs when information observed is used with the flat files. The flat file structure provides, in the simplest case, a representation of results (consequences) in terms of observable characteristics (antecedents). Each such association is treated as a rule. The inference engine functions by backward or forward chaining rule- based deduction that amounts to proof of a goal statement on the basis of any initial state (a set of previously verified primitive statements) by application of production rules (P-rules). In accordance with one embodiment, in order to prove a goal, backward chaining occurs so that rules applied derive intermediate goals until every new intermediate goal is confined by the initial state. An explanation system (13) is incorporated which consists of displaying affirmative or negative English sentences as reports of each step pieced together during the proofs carried out by the inference engine. The report replicates the expert's line of reasoning in arriving at the conclusion of a proof. The invention thus achieves a portable expert system which is not dependent on any particular host computer system or any particular programming language and which can be utilized in any general purpose computer system (14) or in a particular computer hardware apparatus which offers the advantages of faster run times, less power and less volume. <IMAGE>
