titleOfInvention Irrigator control system
abstract The invention is concerned with an irrigator of the kind comprising a central pivot having a water supply, an irrigation arm typically extending some hundreds of metres and constituted by a plurality of spans pivoted together and carried on ground engaging driving support towers and means for distributing water from the supply along the arm for discharging it to provide irrigation. A control system for maintaining the spans in substantial alignment comprises an angle sensor incorporating a bar magnet 31 connected to one span and a Hall-effect device 32 connected to the adjacent span and arranged to move longitudinally along the magnet with relative movement between the two spans. An adjustable zeroing signal VO backs off the Hall-effect device output to zero when the two spans are aligned. After amplification in variable gain amplifier 61 the resulting angle signal VS is compared with a reference voltage in comparator 62 which operates a forward drive actuator to bring the spans into alignment when VS exceeds VR. To overcome misalignment in the opposite direction, an inverted signal minus VS is compared with VR in comparator 66 the output from which operates a reverse drive actuator. <IMAGE>
