titleOfInvention | Photographic dispersions |
abstract | Any undesirable reduction in surface tension and/or increase in viscosity which may result from the presence of an anionic surface-active compound in an aqueous hydrophilic colloid-containing dispersion or coating composition can be at least partly controlled by complexing the anionic compound with an organic quaternary salt. The anionic compound may be either a non-diffusible photographic addendum, such as a water-dispersible (Fischer) coupler, or an anionic surfactant used for dispersion a water-insoluble addendum, such as a dye-forming coupler, possibly in admixture with an oil-former. The anionic surface-active compound comprises a hydrophobic residue containing at least eight carbon atoms or, if a fluorocarbon residue at least five carbon atoms, and is present at a concentration of at least 1 gram per litre. The quaternary salt comprises a non fluorinated hydrophobic residue containing at least nine carbon atoms and is present at a concentration of at least 5 mole per cent based on the quantity of the anionic surface active compound. <IMAGE> |
