titleOfInvention Guiding Webs to Splicing Unit
abstract A pair of turning bars (19,20) are used to guide a web (B) to a splicing unit (S) where it is joined to web (A), the web roll (A) support being aligned with the splicing unit and the web roll (B) support being spaced therefrom. The turning bar (19) guides web (B) transversely to web (A) and turning bar (20) redirects the web (B) so that it travels parallel to web (A) towards the splicing unit (S). Turning bar (20) is movable from a position (as shown) below web (A) to a position overlying web (A) by pivoting it alongside web (A) raising it, e.g. using a pneumatic cylinder, and then pivoting it back over web (A). In use, web (A) can be spliced to the trailing end of web (B) by threading web (A) over web (B) to the splicing unit for joining. When web (B) is to be spliced to web (A), initially the turning bar (20) is relocated over web (A) and the web (B) is threaded around the bars, over web (A) and into the splicing unit for joining. After the latter splice is made, the turning bar (20) is lowered to its initial position. <IMAGE>
