abstract |
A process for the preparation of 4-chlorobenzenesulfonyl chloride wherein chlorobenzene is reacted with chlorosulfonic acid in a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon in the presence of an alkali metal salt of a mineral acid and/or an ammonium salt of a mineral acid. After washing the resulting reaction mixture with water and separating the halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon layer, water may be distilled off, together with the halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon to obtain 4-chlorobenzenesulfonyl chloride in an anhydrous state. The 4- chlorobenzenesulfonyl chloride obtained can be converted into 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone by reacting it with chlorobenzene in the presence of a catalytic amount of ferric chloride. |
