abstract | A method for assaying microbial cells in a sample comprises incubating the sample with a predetermined quantity of a specific nutrient medium for form 10-20 minutes whereby to activate microbial metabolism and increase the level of ATP per cell to the level prevailing during the logarithmic growth phase, releasing ATP from the microbial cells, determining the quantity of released ATP by a bioluminescent assay and estimating the number of microbial cells in the original sample for the determined quality of ATP. |
