abstract A method of producing L- phenylalanine wherein an aqueous solution containing trans-cinnamate ions and ammonium ions, which solution is substantially free of halide ions, is contacted with phenylalanine ammonia lyase. A high degree of the activity of the phenylalanine ammonia lyase is maintained and the catalyst can be reused.
