titleOfInvention Improvements relating to acoustic wave sensing arrangements
abstract A steerable optical fibre acoustic array comprises a single mode optical fibre having very low birefringence and having associated with it means for producing a magnetic field extending axially along the optical fibre for effecting rotation of the plane of polarisation of light when transmitted along the fibre, the pitch of rotation of the plane of polarisation being variable by a change in strength of the magnetic field or by a change in the wavelength of the aforesaid light transmitted by the optical fibre when in use in order to steer the acoustic array for detecting acoustic signals from different directions, in which the single mode optical fibre of the array comprises a liquid core 1 contained within a glass or silicon tube 2 and having a higher refractive index than the tube material. <IMAGE>
