Dihydropyridines of the formula <IMAGE> wherein R<1> is one or two substituents on the phenyl ring which are the same or different and selected from NO2,Cl and C1-C5 alkyl; R is -CH2, -CHO or <IMAGE> wherein R<11> and R<12> are C1-C5 alkyl or both together are part of 5-7 membered ring, provided that when one of R is -CH3 the other is -CHO or <IMAGE> are useful in the treatment of diseases where smooth muscle relaxation is important e.g. in the treatment of cardiovascular disease and hypertension. Various methods for their preparation are described. The new compounds may be converted to known 2,6- dimethyl analogues. |
