abstract A two gauge electronic mercury column sphygmomanometer in which the mercury column (10) is provided with a permanent magnet float (12). After initial pressurization, and while the column of mercury (10) is falling slowly, a patient's Korotkov sounds are detected. Upon detection of the first Korotkov sound, an electromagnet (16) is energized and automatically causes the float (12) to be attracted to the inner wall of the glass tube (9) containing the mercury column (10). The permanent magnet float (12) remains affixed as an indication of the patient's systolic blood pressure. Whereas upon disappearing of the last Korotkov sound, a solenoid valve actuates to close an air passage and let a falling mercury column (10) stop automatically to indicate the patient's diastolic blood pressure. A pair of terminals positioned within mercury tube (9) comprises a switching circuit, which can be automatically powered on and off when the mercury column (10) is above and below a predetermined fixed height. <IMAGE>
