abstract | A process for the production of acetaldehyde dimethyl acetal comprises reacting methanol with carbon dioxide and hydrogen at an elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of (i) a promoter comprising a halogen and/or a halide, (ii) a cobalt catalyst and (iii) either a co-catalyst comprising nickel together with a compound of trivalent arsenic and/or antimony or one or more of the metals molybdenum, tungsten, uranium, chromium, vanadium, titanium and iron together with a compound of trivalent phosphorous, arsenic and/or antimony as ligand. The reaction is effected using a ratio of carbon monoxide to hydrogen of between 2:1 and 1:3; up to 1% by weight of cobalt and up to 5% by weight of the above-mentioned metals, based on the methanol used, is used; the molar ratio of ligand to co-catalyst is from 5:1 to 1:5. |
