abstract The invention provides a method of coating and/or impregnating a sorbent substrate, such as a paper shell for cartridging slurry explosives, with sulphur modified by a modifier so that at least some of it is a non- crystalline solid upon setting from the molten state. The modifier can be an alkyl compound with a conjugated double bond, a polysulphide or phosphorus. The invention extends to the impregnated product, and to a sulphur-based composition for use in the impregnation and a method of preparing it.
