abstract In the production of soluble fusible condensation products from phenols and formaldehyde by the process of the parent Specification, an organic acid soluble in benzene is used in the second stage; the resulting resins are "Novolaks" and are soluble in benzene and fatty, mineral, or ethereal oils. Suitable acids are acetic, benzoic, salicylic, stearic, palmitic, oleic, or resin acid. The bases employed in the first stage are preferably volatile ones, such as ammonia or dimethylamine.
