abstract The present invention provides a compound of the general formula I <IMAGE> wherein R<1> denotes a hydrogen atom, a straight chain or branched chain alkyl group having up to 8 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms, or a phenyl group, which latter may be substituted by 1, 2 or 3 substituents selected from halogen atoms, C1-4 alkyl groups, and C1-4 alkoxy groups, and a process for the preparation thereof. The compounds of the general formula I are useful in the synthesis of prostaglandins or prostacyclins.
