Improved acetoxylation process for the preparation of ethylene glycol esters |
abstract |
An improved acetoxylation process is provided for the liquid phase preparation of ethylene glycol esters which process comprises reacting ethylene, molecular oxygen and acetic acid at a temperature of from 125 DEG C. to 200 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising tellurium and an appropriate source of bromide ions to give increased rates of reaction and minimize the production of higher molecular weight (glycolic acid-ethylene glycol ester) polymeric by-products as well as other heavy materials, and wherein the oxidation reaction is maintained at a partial pressure of oxygen of from 2 to 10 psia at the reactor outlet and a partial pressure of ethylene of from 15 to 50 psia at the reactor outlet with a total concentration of tellurium cation in the reaction system of between 0.1 to 0.5 wt % based on the total reaction mixture. |
