abstract | An anomer or an asteric mixture of a compound of the formula <IMAGE> wherein R is selected from <IMAGE> wherein R1 to R4 may be the same or different and are selected from hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower haloalkyl, lower aminoalkyl, lower alkynyl, -OX and -(CH2)n-OX and isomers thereof with the provisos that R1 and R2 are not hydroxy and one of R3 and R4 must be hydrogen, wherein X is selected from hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, and lower alkynyl, n is an integer of from one to four, R5 is hydrogen or lower alkyl; R6 to R14 are selected from hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl and lower alkynyl with the proviso that one of R7 and R8 is always hydrogen and one of R11 and R12 is always hydrogen, and B and B1 are the same or different and are selected from hydrogen, hydroxy, alkoxy, o-lower alkyenyl, thio, thio- lower alkyl and thio-lower alkenyl, and A is oxygen or sulfur; or a hydrate or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or salt hydrate thereof; excluding spectinomycin, are novel compounds. These novel compounds, and also spectinomycin, are prepared by a synthetic route involving coupling of an actinamide with a sugar. They can be used for treating bacterial infections and tumours. |
