In an electroluminescent display device comprising an electroluminescent layer (2) between a transparent electrode layer (4) and a segmented electrode layer (3), a layer (1) of dark material interposed between the electroluminescent layer (2) and the segmented electrode layer (3) to provide high contrast has a resistivity high enough to prevent haloing in the display when the device is electrically energised. The dark material may be a II-VI compound such as CdTe or ZnTe and may also contain elements or compounds from groups IV and VIII, e.g. PbTe, SnTe, or SnCl. A dielectric layer (5) is provided between dark layer (1) and segmented electrode layer (3). Alternatively the dielectric layer may be positioned between electroluminescent layer (2) and dark layer (1). <IMAGE> |
