abstract | Processes for producing asymmetric polyacrylonitrile membranes for use in reverse osmosis comprise dissolving an acrylonitrile polymer in formamide (FA) containing dimethyl- formamide (DMF); shaping the solution while maintaining its temperature above the gellation point; removing the solvent from the shaped product; heating the thus-obtained membrane at 50-120 DEG C and subjecting it to a plasma treatment. In a first process the solvent is removed by treating one surface of the membrane at a temperature below 15 DEG C with an aqueous solution containing at least 10 weight % of a water- soluble solvent compatible with FA/ DMF. In a second process the solvent is removed by treatment with an inert atmosphere and then at a temperature below 40 DEG C with an aqueous solution containing 0-10% of a water soluble solvent compatible with FA/DMF. |
