titleOfInvention | A Process for the Production of Nuclear Fuel Monocarbide |
abstract | The invention provides a process for the production of a nuclear fuel monocarbide which comprises reacting an oxidic nuclear fuel with uranium dicarbide as a carbon- containing material at a temperature above 1300 DEG C. The nuclear fuel monocarbide is particularly uranium monocarbide or uranium-plutonium monocarbide. Preferably the molar ratio of oxidic nuclear fuel to uranium dicarbide during the reaction amounts to about 1:3, the reaction is carried out at a temperature above 1600 DEG C and the reaction is carried out in a vacuum of </=10<-6> bar. In the process according to the invention no uncontrollable quantities of CO-gas are given off during the reaction or during subsequent production of fuel pellets, batches formed do not differ from one another in regard to their carbide content and plutonium is introduced as late as possible into the process. |
