abstract | Symmetrical 1,3-dichloroacetone is prepared in improved yields by contacting molecular chlorine with an aqueous mixture comprising acetone and/or monochloroacetone, and an iodine-containing promoter which is either iodine chloride or a substance capable of forming iodine chloride when contacted with molecular chlorine. The process can be carried out in a cyclic manner in which, if desired, continuous regeneration of iodine chloride may be effected. |
