titleOfInvention Mathematical apparatus
abstract Apparatus for use as an aid in teaching mathematics comprises rectanguloid elements of different shapes and sizes and having size-related colour characteristics. The constituent elements include a multiplicity of small same colour cubic blocks 2, a group of square slabs 3', 3'', 3''' of a colour different from that of the small cubic blocks, each slab having a thickness equal to the edge length of one of such blocks and a side length which is a whole number multiple of that length, and a group of bars 4', 4'', 4''' whose colour differs from the colours of the cubic blocks and slabs, each bar having a width and thickness equal to the edge length of one of said blocks and a length equal to the side length of one of the slabs. The apparatus can additionally include a large cubic block 1 of edge length also equal to the side length of one of the slabs. The apparatus is useful for a variety of purposes including the explanation and representation of fractions and their multiplication and of algebraic formulations and processes. <IMAGE>
