abstract The invention relates to cationic fluorescent whitening agents of the formula <IMAGE> wherein A is the radical of a fluorescent whitening agent, Q is the direct bond or a bridge member, R1 to R5 are specific substituents and n is 1 or 2. The compounds are prepared by reacting the corresponding non- quaternised amine compounds with a phosphite or phosphonate of formula (R3O) (R5O) P(O)-(R4). The compounds are used for whitening organic materials.
