Herbicidal diphenyl ether compounds of the formula: <IMAGE> wherein R<1> is an alkyl group optionally substituted by fluorine, phenyl or halophenyl; R<2> is hydrogen, halogen or nitro; R<3> is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, trifluoromethyl, or cyano; R<4> is hydrogen, halogen, or trifluoromethyl; R5 is halogen or trifluoromethyl; and R<6> is hydrogen, or C1-C4 alkyl; may be obtained by standard organic syntheses e.g. by reacting the corresponding diphenyl ether acid chloride with a sulphonamide of the formula R<1>SO2 NH2. These compounds are useful as selective herbicides in a range of crops, for example cotton, soya bean, peas, maize, wheat and rice. |
