A feed supplement for monogastric animals comprises chopped green forage with an addition of from 1 to 5% by weight of at least one organic acid having a preserving action and/or at least one salt thereof, e.g. formic, acetic, propionic or benzoic acid, Na, Ca or Al formate, Na, Ca or NH4 propionate or NH4 isobutyrate. NaOH (to digest fibre), inorganic acids and NaHSO3 may also be added. The addition overcomes disadvantages (concerned with digestibility, acceptability, storage, preservation, nutrient and microorganism content and use in automatic feeders) of fresh green forage and silage therefrom in the feeding of pigs, particularly for fattening, and of poultry. |
