The invention provides novel N- benzyl derivatives of adriamycin and daunomycin having anti-cancer activity and being compounds of the formula <IMAGE> where R = -COCH3, -CHOHCH3, -COCH2OH or -CHOHCH2OH and X = NHCH2Ph or -N(CH2Ph)2, and their pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts. Also included are pharmaceutical compositions containing these derivatives and salts as the active ingredient. The compounds are made by reductive N-benzylation of the free amines. |
