15-Deoxy-16-hydroxy-16-substituted prostanoic acids are represented by the following general formula and the mirror image thereof: <IMAGE> wherein W is <IMAGE> wherein R1 is hydrogen or C1-12 alkyl; R2 is an alkyl or alkenylmethyl group (C3- C7) optionally substituted with one or two C1-3 alkyls; R3 is hydrogen, hydroxyl, alkanoyloxy (C2-C6), triloweralkylsilyloxy, tetrahydropyran-2-yloxy or alkoxy (C1-C3); R4 is hydrogen or alkanoyloxy (C2-C6); T is <IMAGE> wherein R5 is vinyl, cyclopropyl, or 2- or 1-propenyl; C13-C14 is trans-vinylene or ethylene; and Z is -(CH2)6-, <IMAGE> -(CH2)n-S-CH2 or (CH2)n-O-CH2 where n is 3 to 5; and when R1 is hydrogen, the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. The compounds (which embrace all the optical antipodes, racemic mixtures and diasteromeric mixtures corresponding to the above general formula) have potential utility in the medical and veterinary fields. |
