Acetaldehyde; formaldehyde.-Acetaldehyde and formaldehyde are obtained from the ethylene present in the distillation gases of coal, brown coal, peat, wood, &c. by heating the gases together with carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, oxygen, etc.; when carbon dioxide or sulphur dioxide is used the product consists mainly of acetaldehyde; the use of oxygen gives mainly formaldehyde; when employing oxygen the heating is regulated, and catalysts, such as platinized asbestos or reduced copper, may be used, or the oxygen may be ionized. |
