titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the Manufacture of Metallic Filaments for Incandescent Electric Lamps. |
abstract | 14,807. Scoular, J. A., and Dick, Kerr, & Co. June 26. [Addition to 11,455/12.] Filaments of tungsten, made with sodium silicate as a binder as described in the parent Specification, are now treated with a solution of hydrofluoric acid after baking but before sintering; this prevents them from sticking together after being heated in bunches in a furnace. Squirted filaments are dried in an air-oven while hung over glass rods, and then baked in bunches on hooks of tungsten or molybdenum in an electric furnace containing dry hydrogen or the like. They are next immersed for an hour in commercial hydrofluoric acid, hot or cold, and then washed in water, in which they may remain until required to be sintered. Sintering may be done in bulk in a furnace at a bright white heat, or individually. The Provisional Specification refers also to the use for sintering of a vertical tube furnace of carbon, molybdenum, or tungsten, the filaments being elevated into it in from one-and-a-half to three minutes, according to thickness, and lowered in half a minute. |
