titleOfInvention An Improved Process for the Manufacture of Water Soluble Dyestuffs.
abstract 12,095. Turner, A. May 22. Dyes, mixtures and preparations of; lakes.- Soluble preparations of dyes are obtained by dissolving saponifiable waxes in solutions of neutral soaps, and adding solutions of acid dyes, the product being then precipitated, washed, dried, and ground. Or a dye soluble in melted wax is dissolved in the melted wax, which is then dissolved in a hot neutral soap solution; acid dyes may be subsequently added; the product is then precipitated &c. as above. According to examples: -carnauba wax is dissolved in boiling neutral olive oil soap solution, cosin solution is added, and the product is salted out. etc.; a mixture of carnauba wax, beeswax, and montan wax, is dissolved in olive oil soap solution, acid black 6B is added, and the product is salted out etc.; sudan II is dissolved in a melted mixture of carnauba wax and beeswax, the product is dissolved in olive oil soap solution, acid ponceau is added, and the product salted out &c. The following acid dyes are also specified as suitable:-lake red, acid milling scarlet, and generally hydroxy, carboxylic, sulphonic, sulphite, or bisulphite dyes, such as cotton dyes, wool dyes, eosines, sulphur dyes, alizarin dyes, indigo carmine, or natural dyes, such as hematine, logwood, camwood, turmeric, orchil, &c. Sudan I, III, or G, sudan brown, oil yellow, or oil black, or the combinations of higher fatty acids such as stearic acid with bases of the aminoazo, diaminoazo, triphenylmethane, diphenylnaphthylmethane, azine, thiazine, oxazine, xanthene, or acridine series, are also specified as suitable dyes for dissolving in the melted wax. Borax, sodium or potassium carbonate, or other saponifying-agent may be used together with the soap. The products may be used for dyeing, finishing, or printing, or in the manufacture of lakes &c. According to the Provisional Specification, soluble basic dyes. such as rhodamines, safranines, or neutral violet, may replace the acid colours.
