Ball and like mills.-In an apparatus for the grinding and magnetic preparation or oiling of the metalliferous contents of an ore or the like, a magnetic paint or oily liquid is distributed to the metalliferous particles by means of shot, balls, coarse crushed ore, or other substance which readily becomes coated with the paint or oil, in the presence of pebbles, quartz, or other hard substance which is not easily coated and so prevents the formation of lumps, granules, or agglomerations. The operation is carried out in a tube mill which is provided with discharge orifices near the centre and also at or near the periphery. The orifices may be fitted with screens of varying mesh, and the central orifices are closed when the peripheral ones are open, and vice versa. The tube is iron or flint lined. A stationary steam, air, or other ejector may be provided for discharging ore at the centre of the tube.
