titleOfInvention Process for the Manufacture of Cellulosic Esters, Soluble in Chloroform, and Products Forming the Degrees of Transition to the Cellulosic Esters, Insoluble or Difficulty Soluble in Chloroform, as well as the Products of their Transformation.
abstract 20,978. Dreyfus, H. July 5, [Convention date]. Void. [Published under Section 91 of the Act.] [Application for Patent of Addition to 20,977/11.] Acetates and other carboxylates. - Cellulose esters, of solubilities in chloroform ranging from easily soluble to difficultly soluble or insoluble, are obtained by employing larger proportions of acetic anhydride or other esterifying-agents than those referred to in the parent Specification thus, when using 10 per cent or less of sulphuric acid as condensing-agent, 3 to 3ยข parts.of acetic anhydride are employed to each part of cellulose; with larger quantities of sulphuric acid, an additional quantity of acetic anhydride is used. The reaction may be effected in presence or absence of diluents, such as glacial acetic acid, or in suspension. The acetic anhydride may be replaced by corresponding amounts of acetyl chloride or homologous anhydrides or chlorides. Other condensing-agents or mixtures thereof may be used instead of sulphuric acid. The cellulose employed may be moist or dry, or may be subjected to preliminary treatment with a mixture of glacial acetic and sulphuric acids, or with dilute sulphuric acid; or the cellulose may be replaced by its transformation products. The esterification is preferably effected at ordinary temperatures, or while cooling. Products of varied solubility are obtained by treating with dilute organic or inorganic acids, acid salts, or mixtures thereof, cellulose esters soluble in chloroform, or those of solubilities ranging to difficultly soluble or insoluble in chloroform, such as those described above, or by allowing the original acetylating solutions to stand with or without addition of water, acids, &c.,'the reaction being in each case interrupted when the desired quantities of solubility have been obtained ; there are thus obtained products soluble in acetone, alcohol-benzene, dilute acetone, alcohol, dilute alcohol, alcohol - chloroform, alcohol-tetrachlorethane, hot water, &c. ; according to an example, dilute nitric acid is employed. The products of the above-described processes may be employed in the manufacture of films, artificial silk or horsehair, celluloid - like substances, coatings, varnishes, &c.
