titleOfInvention Process for Decolourising Tannin-extracts.
abstract 19,804. Deutsche Versuchsanstalt f³r Lederindustrie, and Arnoldi, H. Sept. 7, 1908, [Convention date]. Processes and materials for treating hides and skins. - Tannic extracts are decolorized by means of an amalgam of " activated " aluminium formed by treating scrap aluminium with alkali lye, washing the product, treating it with a solution of chloride of mercury, and finally washing it again. The extract under treatment is heated to about 30‹ C. or 40‹ C., and the aluminium compound is stirred in, whereupon decolorization is effected by the nascent hydrogen which is produced, and by the formation of tannate of alumina by the more strongly-coloured tannin material. After decolorization, the whole is stirred and heated to about 90‹ C., and the insoluble material is allowed to settle. The process is particularly applicable to extracts of quebracho and mangrove or malette bark. About 80 grm. of aluminium are used to 100 kg. of tannin extract of 10‹ BÚ.
