titleOfInvention Manufacture of Products of Condensation of Phenol-alcohols.
abstract 15,517. Fabriques de Produits de Chimie Organique de Laire. Sept. 16, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Phenol- and naphthol-alcohols and their condensation products.-Bodies resembling gums and resins and capable of being used as such are produced by the condensation of phenolalcohols or naphtholalcohols or mixtures thereof, by heating them under reduced pressure. The phenolalcohols &c. used may be prepared by the action of formaldehyde on phenols &c. In examples, resinous products are obtained from saligenin, p-oxybenzylalcohol, and the phenol-alcohol derived from pcresol. The products from saligenin resemble gum lac, and those from cresols resemble copal and hard African resins, both in hardness and in their slight solubility in alcohol.
