titleOfInvention Improvements in the Manufacture of Bromine Alkyl Acetamides
abstract 16,602. Kalle & Co. Dec. 9, A.D. 1903, [date appliedfor under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Bromodialkylacetamides of the general formulµ such as bromo-diethylacetamide bromo-ethyl-propylacetamide and bromo-dipropylacetamide all of which possess hypnotic properties without injurious after-effects, are formed either (1) by converting the corresponding acids by means of phosphorus chlorides into acid chlorides, then treating with bromine to form the bromo-dialkyl acid chlorides, and finally treating with ammonia or ammonium carbonate to form the acetamide ; or (2) by treating the dialkylacetic acids with phosphorus and bromine, then with a further quantity of bromine, and finally with ammonia. If diethylacetyl chloride be used, it is gradually heated to 100‹ C. with bromine, the reaction product is distilled, the bromo diethylacetyl chloride formed is dissolved in ether, ammonia is passed through the solution, and the ethereal solution filtered off and distilled. Or, the chloride is allowed to fall drop by drop into an excess of cooled and stirred ammonia. If dipropylacetic acid be used, it is mixed with phosphorus, and bromine is allowed to fall in small drcps into the mixture. When the reaction is completed, further bromine is added during heating, and the product is distilled. The subsequent treatment is the same as in the first example. Diethylacetic acid is converted into the corresponding chloride by means of phosphorus pentachloride, bromine is added, and the product heated on the water bath. Afterwards, the mixture is allowed to run slowly into aqueous ammonia in large excess.
