titleOfInvention Improvements relating to the Manufacture of Celluloid.
abstract 13,131. Goldsmith, J. N., and British Xylonite Co. July 20. Celluloid and like compositions. - Camphor is wholly or partly replaced by acetochlorhydrins, which may be prepared by allowing glycerine mixed with acetic acid to absorb@hydrochloric-acid gas, in proportions such as to prevent any glycerine from remaining unaltered; after 12 to 24 hours the mixture is distilled, the required products being obtained between 210‹ and 260‹ C. as colourless liquids. The distillation may be effected under reduced pressure. The products may be re-distilled, neutralized, and decolorized. The Provisional Specification mentions the following other substitutes for camphor : - Acetins or glycerine acetic esters; benzicins, or glycerine benzoic esters ; esters of phthalic acid or anhydride, or of succinic acid, and fatty alcohols ; pulegone, thujone, or oils containing these, such as oil of pennyroyal ; condensation products of acetone or acetone oils with benzaldehyde, acetaldehyde, or formaldehyde. Films made from these materials are stated to be transparent and elastic.
