titleOfInvention Improvements in the Manufacture of Azo Colouring-matters.
abstract 8503. Lake, H. H., [Chemical Works, formerly Sandoz]. April 22. Dyes, artificial.-New blue, green, and black trisazo dyes for unmordanted cotton are produced by the following processes from the monoazo dyes which result from the combination of alpha1-amidoalpha4-naphthol-#2#3-disulphonic acid-H with the diazo compound of an aromatic amine, such as 1 : 2 : 4-, 1 : 2 : 5-, or 1 : 3 : 4- amidodiclilorbenzene, or amidotrichlorbenzene, or homologues of these compounds. (1) A tetrazotized p-diamine, such as benzidine, tolidine, dianisidine, ethoxybenzidine, or the like, is combined with a molecular proportion of one of the monoazo dyes defined above, and then with a dye-stuff component of the benzene or naphthalene series, such as phenol, o- or m-cresol, resorcinol, m-phenylenediamine, m-toluylenediamine, m-oxydiphenylamine, a naphthylamine or a sulphonic acid thereof, a naphthol or a sulphonic acid thereof, a dioxynaphthalene or a sulphonic acid thereof, an amidonaphthol or a sulphonic acid thereof, such as 1 : 8 : 4-, 1 : 8 : 5-, or 2 : 8 : 6-amidonaphtholmonosulphonic acid, or 1 : 8 : 2 : 4-, 1 : 8 : 3 : 5-, 1 : 8 : 3 : 6-, or 1 : 8 : 4 : 6-amidonaphtholdisulphonic acid. For example, the dye obtained when phenol is used, dyes cotton green shades, and that obtained when 1 : 8-amidonaphthol- 3 : 6-disulphonic acid is used, dyes cotton, wool, and silk blue shades. (2) A tetrazotized p-diamine is combined with a molecular portion of an o-oxycarboxylic acid, such as salicylic or o-cresotinic acid, and the intermediate product thus obtained is combined with one of the monoazo dyes defined above. These dyes yield green shades upon unmordanted cotton.
