abstract 24,177. Vidal Fixed Aniline Dyes (Limited) and Haas, L. May 5, [date applied for under Sec. 103 of Patents &c. Act, A.D. 1883]. Dyes, artificial.-New violet, blue, and greenishblue dyes of the triphenylmethane and diphenylnaphthylmethane series, suitable for dyeing wool from an acid bath, are produced as follows:- Tetramethyl- or tetraethyldiamido-benzhydrol is condensed with phenylhydrazine, or the like, by heating these compounds with sulphuric acid at 60‹-70‹ C., whereby a leuco compound is first formed. Upon further heating the mixture to 80‹ or 90‹ C. ammonia is split off, and, after diluting the mixture and neutralizing it with alkali, the dye-stuff is precipitated. Examples are given in which there are used phenylhydrazine, p-sulphophenylhydrazine, methyl- and ethyl-phenylhydrazine, 1 : 4-sulphonaphthylhydrazine, and the alpha-naphthylhydrazine disulphonic acid derived from Dahl's alpha-naphthylamine disulphonic acids II and III.
