titleOfInvention | The manufacture of dyestuffs of the triarylmethane series |
abstract | Triarylmethane dyestuffs dyeing tannined cotton in reddish-violet to bluish-violet shades, are obtained by condensing 4 : 41 dialkyl-diamino-3 : 31-dimethylbenzophenone with a secondary or tertiary amine using a condensing agent such as phosphorous oxychloride. Such dyestuffs as contain a phenyl, benzyl, or naphthyl group in the amino group may be sulphonated when they dye wool similar shades from an acid bath. According to examples (1) 4 : 41-diethyl-diamino-3 : 31-dimethyl-benzophenone is condensed with ethyl-o-toluidine in toluene in presence of phosphorus oxychloride; the ethyl-o-toluidine may be replaced by ethyl-a -naphthylamine, phenyl-a -naphthylamine, ethylbenzylaniline, or dibenzylaniline: (2) the basic dyestuff from the same ketone and dibenzylaniline or 4-methyl-31-methoxydiphenylamine (Specification 11275/91) is sulphonated with 20 per cent oleum. 4 : 41 - Dialkyldiamino - 3 : 31 - diamethylbenzophenones may be obtained by the hydrolysis of the corresponding thioketones prepared by the method of Specification 20615/14. In an example 4 : 41-diethyldiamino-3 : 31-dimethylbenzo thiophenone is boiled with concentrated hydrochloric acid and the ketone precipitated by caustic soda. |
