titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to rotary internal combustion engines
abstract 185,149. Thompson, W. P., (Augustine Automatic Rotary Engine Co.). March 24, 1921. Valves; valve-gear.-In a two-stroke engine, radial cylinders rotate about a fixed crank-shaft 6, 7 fitted with bearings 13, 69 supporting the crank casing carrying the cylinders. The crank chamber comprises a central portion 1 and' end plates 9, 10, the plate 1.0 being secured to a power shaft 12. The cylinder cover 37 extends beyond the upper end of the cylinder wall and seats upon a flange x, a sliding valve 52 being mounted in a recess between the cylinder wall and the cover 37. Combustible mixture is drawn through pipes 62 into the outer ends of the cylinders, the charges, after compression, being returned through these pipes into the interior of the crank chamber, from which the charges enter the annular combustion spaces y through ports 40 in the trunks 21 of the pistons. Distribution of the pump charges is controlled by a disc 60 secured to the crank-shaft. Combustible mixture is admitted through a passage 59 opening into a chamber 61, which communicates in succession with the ends of the pipes 62 as the cylinders rotate. During the delivery strokes of the pumps, the ends of the pipes 62 open into an annual space 65 leading to the crank chamber. Burnt gases escape from the combustion space through ports 44 controlled by the valve 52 in such a way that the ports open before the inlet ports 40 and close before them. The valve is actuated by the grooved cams 56 mounted on the crank-pin, the valve being connected to the cam by rods 53 mounted in tubes 53<b> and carrying cam rollers at their inner ends.
