titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of symmetrical alkylated metaphenylenediamines
abstract By the action of primary or secondary alkylamines or their salts upon resorcinol at a high temperature, a mixture of the alkyl derivatives of m-aminophenol and of symmetrically alkylated m-phenylenediamines is produced, from which the latter can be separated. The reaction is effected in alcoholic or aqueous solution and is facilitated by the presence of sulphurous acid or its salts. The examples describe the preparation of symmetrical dimethyl-m-phenylenediamine, tetramethyl- and tetraethyl-m-phenylenediamines; methyl-, dimethyl- and diethyl-m-aminophenols are respectively formed as by-products. Specifications 8156/89 and 18726/00 are referred to.
