titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to the preparation and manufacture of di-ethyl sulphate
abstract Diethyl sulphate is prepared by passing ethylene in great excess into sulphuric acid containing 80-100 per cent H7SO4 or into oleum containing up to 90 per cent SO3 at a temperature not exceeding 120 DEG C. Ethyl hydrogen sulphate is first formed, and this is converted into diethyl sulphate by containing the introduction of ethylene until the weight of the reaction mixture has increased by at least 20 per cent of the weight of sulphuric acid present. Ethyl hydrogen sulphate prepared in any known manner may be used in the first instance as the absorbent for the ethylene.
