titleOfInvention Manufacture of vinyl compounds and polymerisation products thereof
abstract Vinyl halides are prepared by heating acetylene hydrocarbons with halogen hydrides or with methyl halides under pressure. An inert gas or liquid may be present, thereby enabling the pressure to be increased. Apparatus is described. According to examples:-(1) acetylene and hydrochloric acid yield vinyl chloride, (2) crotonylene and hydrochloric acid give a compound of the probable formula CH3-CH=CCl-CH3, (3) allylene and hydrochloric acid yield a mixture of b -chlorpropylene and another chlorine derivative, (4) acetylene and methyl chloride produce a compound of the probable formula CH3-CH=CHCl, and (5) allylene and methpl chloride form a mixture of the compounds CH3-CCl=CH-CH3 and CH3-C(CH3)=CHCl. By increasing the pressure, temperature, or time or reaction, the vinyl halides are polymerized; the polymerisation may be effected without the intermediate isolation of the vinyl halide. Vinyl esters are produced by heating acetylene hydrocarbons with aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acids under pressure. A catalyst may be present, e.g. mercury, magnesium, tin, copper, or their salts, iodine, hydriodic acid, boron compounds, or organic acid anhydrides. According to an example, acetylene is condensed with acetic acid by heating under pressure in the presence of acetic anhydride, producing a mixture of vinyl acetate and ethylidene diacetate. Instead of acetic acid, propionic acid may be employed; or the oxy, amino, chlor, or aryl derivatives of acetic acid. Polymerized vinyl esters are obtained by increasing the temperature, pressure, or time of reaction employed for the preparation of the vinyl ester, which need not be isolated as the intermediate product. Caoutchouc, synthetic.-Rubber-like substances are obtained by eliminating the halogens from polymerized vinyl halides, by means of sodium, zinc, magnesium, or calcium. Acyclic hydrocarbons.-By removal of hydrochloric acid from the addition products of alkylene and methyl chloride, crotonylene is obtained, together with a hydrocarbon of the formula C4H6 possessing two double bonds.
