abstract | 1536057 Sulphonation of fluorine-containing copolymers ORONIZIO DE NORA IMPIANTI ELETTROCHIMICI SpA 26 March 1976 [28 March 1975] 12174/76 Heading C3P A water - wettable and water - insoluble sulphonated copolymer contains units derived from (A) a monomer of the formula where X is an electron attracting group, and Q is H, methyl or ethyl, and (B) a fluorinated monomer of formula where R=H, halogen, or C 1 -C 4 alkyl or halogeraced alkyl, and each Y is H or halogen and wherein at least one Y=fluorine. The copolymer may be prepared by sulphonating the copolymer derived from units (A) and (B) to replace at least part of the hydrogen atoms on the carbon adjacent to the group X with an -SO 3 H group. In the examples, compound A is acrylic acid or crotonic acid, and compound B is tetrafluoroethylene or chlorotrifluoroethylene; the copolymers are sulphonated using a solution of SO 3 in liquid SO 2 . Sulphonation may also be effected with gaseous SO 3 in an inert gas. |
