titleOfInvention Electrodes for electrolysis
abstract 1535104 MnO 2 -coated electrodes DIAMOND SHAMROCK TECHNOLOGIES CORP 10 Dec 1976 [10 Dec 1975] 51580/76 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] An electroysis electode has a conductive base coated with #-MnO 2 made by thermal decomposition of an alcoholic (e.g. C 1-4 alkanol) solution of Mn(NO 3 ) 2 . The solution may contain water and is desirably free of SO 4 , Cl and PO 4 . Up to 20% of the coating may be replaced by SiO 2 , SnO 2 and/or #- PbO 2 . Up to 5% total of a metal of Groups IB, IIB, IVA, VA, VB, VIB, VIIB or VIII (excluding Pt metals, Au and Ag) may also be included. Such modifications are effected by adding thermally decomposible compounds to the coating solution. Coating involves heating at 200-500‹ C. in an oxygenic atmosphere while avoiding total conversion of MnO 2-x to MnO 2 with e.g. up to 40 successive coating applications. An intermediate layer of a Pt metal and/or a Pt metal or valve metal oxide may be applied e.g. RuO 2 .TiO 2 . The base may be a valve metal or alloy (e.g. Ti with up to 5% Co or Mn), graphite or FeSi, and may be grit blasted and pickled before coating. The coating may be bombarded with #-radiation (e.g. from P u <SP>304</SP>) before use, and is useful as an anode in electrowinning from acid sulphate solutions (in which case it may contain Co) and in perchlorate production (when it may contain As, Sb or Bi).
