| abstract | 1533397 Flameproofing HOOKER CHEMICALS & PLASTICS CORP 30 Dec 1975 [31 Dec 1974] 53173/75 Heading DIP [Also in Division C2] Combustible materials especially cellulosic materials such as cotton, rayon, paper, jute, ramie, wood and blends thereof with synthetic fibres, e.g. blends of cotton or rayon with nylon, polyesters, acrylics or wool are rendered flame-retardant by treating them with a bromine-containing phosphoramidate having the formula: wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are H, Cl, Br or chloro - or bromo-C 1 -C 8 alkyl, R<SP>3</SP> and R' are H, C 1 -C 8 alkyl, C 1 -C 8 hydroxyalkyl or C 1 -C 8 chloro- or bromo-alkyl and R' may also be a group of the formula: wherein R is C 2 -C 8 alkylene, phenylene, biphenylene or dicyclohexylene with the proviso that at least one of R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> is Br or bromoalkyl and at least one of R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> is hydroxyalkyl, especially hydroxymethyl, or with a composition containing such phosphoramidate. The phosphoramidate may be used in admixture with other flame-retardant phosphorus compounds, e.g. the compound or especially various tetrakis (alpha-hydroxyorgano) phosphonium salts (or hydroxides) or the products of neutralisation of such salts with an alkali metal hydroxide or tertiary amine, or partially polymerised phosphonium salts of the defined type. The fabric can be treated with a composition containing the phosphoramidate and said other flame retardant phosphorus compound or may be treated sequentially with the two types of compound, in either order. Examples are given for the treatment of cotton cloth and various polyester/ cotton cloths. |
