titleOfInvention Process for the production of printing formes
abstract 1530287 Laser sensitive materials for printing plates HOECHST AG 8 Oct 1975 [10 Oct 1974] 41215/75 Heading G2C A printing forme is produced by exposing a hydrophilic layer on a carrier to a laser beam, the exposed areas becoming irreversibly hydrophobic and oleophilic. The hydrophilic layer is insensitive to daylight and normal light exposure intensities, is either water-soluble or water-insoluble and comprises either monomeric or polymeric organic compounds or inorganic substances. Examples given include water-soluble polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyalkylene oxides, polyalkylene imines, cellulose ether, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, polyacrylamide, polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid, starch, wheat gluten, dextrine, casein, gelatin, gum arabic and tannin. Water-soluble dyes such as Rhodamine B, 6G and 6DN extra, Methylene Blue, Astrazon orange R, eosin or triphenyl methane dyes e.g. Crystal Violet. Film-forming carbohydrates and their esters, ethers and salts. Wetting agents e.g. saponins, alkylated sulphosuccinic and arylsulphonic acid salts, polyglycols and polyglycolalkyl phenolethers. Water-insoluble organic compounds such as the association products of phenolic resins and polyethylene oxides, melamine formaldehyde resins, amine urea formaldehyde resins, and cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol. Water insoluble inorganic pigments e.g. pyrogenic silicic acid. Water-insoluble inorganic layers formed by treating the metal surface of the carrier, particularly aluminium, with organic or inorganic acids or their salts, or with complex acids or their salts. Examples of the treating compounds are alkali silicates, phosphonic acids and derivatives, titanium or zirconium hexa halides, organic polyacids, monomeric carboxylic acids and derivatives, phosphomolybdates and silicomolybdates. The exposed material can be used immediately, without further processing, on a printing machine, the exposed areas accepting greasy ink.
